Orthodontics for Children
Early orthodontic care focuses on guiding growth while the jaw and teeth are still developing. Treatment is often recommended between ages 7–10 to identify concerns early and create space for permanent teeth. We call this “Phase I”.
Common goals include:
- Correcting bite problems early
- Guiding jaw growth
- Reducing crowding
- Helping permanent teeth erupt properly
- Preventing more complex treatment later
Children may benefit from:
- Space maintainers
- Palatal expanders
- Limited braces
- Habit correction appliances (thumb, finger sucking; tongue thrust)
Early treatment is typically short and more preventive in nature.
Orthodontics for Teens
Teen orthodontics is the most common stage for treatment because most permanent teeth have erupted while the jaw is still growing. We call this “Phase II”. *Note: Phase I and Phase II correct different issues concerning the jaws and teeth. Completing Phase I may reduce or eliminate the need for Phase II, but depending on the case, both or either phase may be needed for best results. Dr. Kim will let you know what is best for your child’s situation.
Treatment often focuses on:
- Straightening teeth
- Correcting bite alignment
- Improving smile aesthetics
- Boosting confidence during important developmental years
Options may include:
- Traditional braces
- Clear braces
- Invisalign Clear aligners for teens
Because teens are still growing, tooth movement can often be more efficient than in adulthood.
Orthodontics for Adults
Adult orthodontics focuses on achieving a healthy, confident smile at any age. Many adults seek treatment to improve appearance, correct shifting teeth, or address bite issues that affect long-term oral health.
Adult treatment can help:
- Straighten crowded or spaced teeth
- Improve bite alignment
- Support gum health and stop bone loss from periodontal disease
- Prepare for cosmetic or restorative dentistry
- Reduce uneven tooth wear and fractures/chipping of teeth
Popular options include:
- Invisalign Clear aligners
- Ceramic braces
- Traditional braces
- Brava (hidden lingual) braces
Since adult jaws are fully developed, treatment may sometimes take longer than it does for teens. Adult orthodontic care is also often coordinated with restorative or periodontal treatment for a comprehensive approach.
A Family-Friendly Summary
- Children: Early guidance and prevention
- Teens: Comprehensive alignment during growth
- Adults: Cosmetic and functional improvements at any age
Orthodontic treatment can be customized for every stage of life to create healthy, confident smiles that last.
