Silver Diamine Fluoride Upper Westside Manhattan

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a minimally invasive treatment used to stop the progression of dental decay and help prevent future cavities. There is no need for drills and needles.  Applied as a liquid directly to affected areas, SDF works by combining the antibacterial properties of silver with the remineralizing effects of fluoride to halt decay and strengthen tooth structure. It is especially beneficial for children, older adults, and patients who prefer to avoid or delay more extensive dental procedures. While treatment is quick, painless, and cost-effective, it may cause treated areas of decay to darken in color, which is a normal and expected result.

In some cases, using SDF may prevent the need for traditional drilling & filling.  In other cases, SDF “buys time” until a long term solution is pursued.  For example, for very young patients where safety is a concern, applying SDF and waiting 6 months to attempt traditional dental fillings can make a big difference towards their maturity, comfort and tolerance.   The cavity is still small, and can be treated much more easily.

Overall, SDF can be used alone or with other treatment modalities in a more conservative approach to preserve tooth structure.
